WESTERN SAHARA DESERT OASIS { 29 images } Created 27 Aug 2013

The Sahara is the world's hottest desert, and the third largest desert after Antarctica and the Arctic. At over 9,400,000 square kilometres (3,600,000 sq mi), it covers most of North Africa, making it almost as large as China or the United States. The Sahara stretches from the Red Sea, including parts of the Mediterranean coasts, to the outskirts of the Atlantic Ocean. To the south, it is delimited by the Sahel, a belt of semi-arid tropical savanna that composes the northern region of central and western Sub-Saharan Africa. El gara oasis is a very small settlement in the middle of the Egyptian Western Sahara, about 100 km north-east from the Siwa oasis. The most impressive landmark here is the ancient fortress (shali), situated on the top of a hill. Many remarkable rock phenomenons can be also found around the oasis. It is worth visiting the old tomb of an islam holy man, the water sources nearby and finally to have a lunch or tea with the local shiekh and the other villagers. The oasis is accessible by 4x4 vehicle only. There is no regular bus connection to Siwa. New
